What inspired you to choose a career in the fitness and performance industry?
Little bit of a long story but, I will shortly summarize it haha. I was a very small individual growing up bullied in school for being different and small then eventually found boxing and weightlifting. In high school where I grew up I was fortunate enough to have a high school with a Strength and conditioning class, but also a teacher who was passionate about strength.
Mr Fitzsimmons would run a Strongman event every year for the students and I joined it being very undersized. However how that contest made me feel led me to soon learn that fitness should be something that everyone partakes in due to the many benefits it provides either mental or physical. Between competing at the highest level in my chosen sport then helping change peoples lives like mine that really was the catalyst for it.
What qualities do you believe are most important in an exceptional coach?
1) Always being willing to continue learning- the world is vast and science and our understanding of things is always changing.
2) Active Listening – super simple but not everyone understands a great coach goes beyond the gym
3) Be passionate about what you do. – As a coach you have the ability to change a person’s entire life, if you aren’t passionate about your own goals how can you invest in others?
4) Eye for detail- The human body is incredibly intricate so this goes a long way
5) Strong sense of self- most coaches who are truly great know who they are and what they do well or who they are as a person .
What is one fun or unique fact about you that clients might be surprised to learn?
I am incredibly geeky/nerdy- I play Dungeons and Dragons, paint miniature models, love comic books and anime, and pretty avid gamer.
What is your coaching philosophy in one or two sentences?
My coaching philosophy is really looking at every client and their goals as a puzzle, they have something they want to achieve and how can I be the person to help put all of the puzzle pieces together to complete the big picture that is their goal. How I do this is through finding important measurable and meaningful goals to each client, then building what they need backwards from that using almost a decade of knowledge and real world experience.
