What is something you have changed your perspective on in the past two years?
I have learned that high intensity and max effort workouts are not necessarily the answer for optimizing health and performance. There are many factors to consider.
Who has been the most influential person in shaping you as a health and performance coach?
My sister has made a career as a personal trainer and gym owner and has influenced much of my health and performance knowledge over the years.
Who has the greatest impact on you as a person?
My parents have had the greatest impact on me as a person. They have shaped who I am and continue to inspire me to be the best version of myself.
What are your top 3-5 book recommendations for person growth, performance, or leadership.
I do most of my learning and education through courses and podcasts.
I regularly invest in my ongoing professional development through multi-sport modules with the Coaching Association of Canada and some of my favorites have been; Psychology and Performance and Injury Prevention and Recovery.
Huberman Lab Podcast has been my go-to for everything health and performance related.
What are you current personal training or athletic goals?
As a Masters athlete competing at the National Open level in the sport of racquetball against athletes’ decades younger, my goal is to continually elevate my fitness and push the boundaries of performance. I would also like to make the Masters CrossFit Games in the next five years if there is an opening for proper training and preparation.
What inspired you to choose a career in the fitness and performance industry?
All though my primary career is not in the health and fitness industry, it has always been a substantial part of my life. My parents owned a gym in GP when I was young, and I have been immersed in the fitness space ever since. Fitness and performance have always been a priority in my life and in sport, and this has drove much of my desire to learn and grow. As of late my kids have had the most influence in my desire to develop as a coach as they continue to pursue their high-performance goals in their sport and rely on my knowledge and programming.
What qualities do you believe are most important in an exceptional coach?
I believe the qualities of an exceptional coach are:
o The ability to listen.
o Be a good communicator.
o Have an eye for small but important details.
o Have a growth mindset.
o Is willing and open to new ideas.
o See’s the bigger picture and plays the long game.
What is one fun or unique fact about you?
I am a bit of a redneck at heart and a hobbyist wild game butcher.
What is your Coaching philosophy?
My coaching philosophy is built on the belief that success is the pursuit of disciplined professionalism, a growth mindset, and a creative vision. I believe that a true transformation can occur when we don’t settle for “good enough” and commit to a standard of excellence that includes both mental and physical greatness.
